watermelon rind and salty roses

Coral ate a whole slice of watermelon before rejecting Peter’s proposal. “I’m just not that kind of girl,” she explained. “I’m like the sea, always changing. I can’t tie myself down like that.” She dove back into the ocean, splashing him with her opal tail.

He couldn’t bring himself to walk home with the roses, so he left them for the hungry waves.

Over the next day, the ocean devoured the symbols of Peter’s desperate love, then spat them out again, rejecting them to the salty sand.
