Valse à trois cœurs/Three-Hearted Waltz – a tribute for World Octopus Day

Tu es la pucelle et l’évêque vénérés;

Comme réponse aux bêtes sous-marines priants,

Tu t’inscris, nouvelle étoile au ciel brillant,

Porte-plume ensoleillé – quoi d’autre à désirer? – que

la courte vie-valse du cher poulpe sacré?

English Translation:

O octopus, constructor of paved paths

of seashells, charmer of valiant vessels

Lover of scattered movements of the arms!

O octopus, cook of the troubling seas

who turns our nothing-paths into a masterpiece

That you should conquer with good taste all enemies!

Not royal gardens nor the precious Louvre

can beat the beauty of your internal cities

Nor can Tardieu engrave the map of the octopus!

Touched by no human winter’s pain

your three innocent hearts ring the fragility

from all the towers, the cisterns of blue light.

You are the venerated virgin and the bishop;

In response to the prayers of undersea beasts,

You inscribe yourself, new star to the brilliant sky,

Sun-filled fountain pen – what else is there to want? – but

the short life-waltz of the dear sacred octopus?
