whack-a-mole

Rules of the game on ground level (our side)

1. Pop your head out of a hole when you feel

like chattering

feeling the lemonade sun tickle your wrists.

2. When the sky cancers over

with mushroom fists

and each one slings a bludgeon down,

Duck.

3. If it splits your skull and your brains are fountaining out

over your folded neck like a strawberry fudge sundae mixed with earthworms

two-weeks-dead and pickled:

Duck even

lower.

We all bounce back.

4. The main objective

is to pop up again, no matter

what. Pop up,

pop up, pop up.

5. The main objective is also to not

get hammered into the earth.

But when that happens, we will all dig tunnels and meet in a central underworld

and huddle there and sew each other’s skulls back together

with straw music and laughter

And we will realize that the point of the game,

after all,

is to be seen and heard and bludgeoned.

And to be there,

and there, and there,

And to be annoying, and be

(and to love being) hated

and to tell one another not to care.

The point of the game

is buried underground.

But it is alive.
